Another blow to the hopes of Europe’s political elites: the Dutch have soundly rejected the European constitutional treaty. According to exit polls, 63 percent said “Nee”. To the chagrin of the Dutch government, the turnout for the referendum (more than 60 percent) was surprisingly high.
The ungrateful Dutch people didn’t mind disappointing their elites:
The disappointment in the Yes camp is compounded by the fact that it failed despite the support of 80 per cent of parliament, nearly every newspaper, and all Dutch business leaders.
What’s plan B for the European constitution? I guess there’s none.
Most likely the European bureaucratic superstate will proceed, whatever the will of the people.
Update: Provisional final results: 61.6 percent “no”, 38.4 percent “yes”. Voter turnout: 62.8 percent.
NEE!
