• ZDF – one of Germany’s largest state-sponsored public media networks – came out with an article promoting a documentary on September 11 conspiracy theories – just in time for the sixth anniversary of the terror attacks. Next to the article is an unscientific poll asking readers to vote on who really “pulled the strings” on September 11, 2001. The poll provides several interesting choices (which themselves say quite a lot about ZDF) and recorded the following numbers:

Above: Who is behind the attacks? (“Rüstungslobby” = arms lobby, “US-Behörden” = US authorities, “Ich weiß nicht” = I don’t know)

The results (with over 6,000 votes registered) indicate that 65% – or nearly two-thirds – of ZDF participants blame either George W. Bush (26%), US authorities (24%) or the nebulous and ever sinister arms lobby (15%) for 9/11. By comparison, only 27% selected Osama Bin Laden as the culprit and 9% said they didn’t know. The article itself promotes a documentary which claims to shed on 9/11 and provide “research” that “solidifies” an “allegation against authorities.” A translation of the summary can be read here – and the banner and headline can be viewed below:

Above: “Myth and Truth: Documentation: 11 September 2001 – what really happened: ZDF Research hardens allegations against authorities”

This article and poll – published by a major German television network six years to the day after 9/11 – bear further witness to the outrageous and warped views that cloud the minds of so many in Germany and around the world. Some, including German pacifist activist Angelika Claussen, chose to portray the attacks as “accidents” while others pretend to live in a world where the attacks simply did not take place or are to be collectively repressed. Genuine anger with the true culprits – the fanatical Al-Qaeda terrorists who plague the world with their murderous activity – is nowhere to be found.

Others, including the conspiracy nuts who have gained notoriety and a sizable following, twist the facts in an effort to create a narrative to suit their own primitive anti-American tendencies. They thrive on a culture that blames America for virtually everything. They seek to wash away their own historic guilt at the altar of the sacrificial world-scapegoat – the hated 800 pound gorilla and source of all the world’s ills – The United States of America. These “useful idiots” are – sadly enough – all too useful to Al-Qaeda and other anti-American fanatics in their propaganda war against the United States – as Osama bin Laden’s recent reference to Noam Chomsky demonstrates.

Let there be no mistake: The only reason ZDF and other German media promote this sort of material over and over again is because so many Germans want to buy and believe it. Deep down – far more Germans than anyone is willing to admit are convinced that American leaders destroyed their own buildings and thousands of their fellow citizens to justify a campaign to invade the Middle East for oil. They believe that George W. Bush – together with a sinister cabal of government authorities and arms merchants (i.e. the dreaded military-industrial complex that haunts the fantasies of much of the Angry Left) essentially murdered thousands of innocents – and managed to keep the entire operation secret – without so much as a leak. (This despite the fact that it is also universally accepted among members of the Angry Left that Bush is a complete idiot incapable of forming a coherent sentence…)

Sadly – this article is symptomatic of a wider mental illness that affects a disproportionate number of Germans and is to be found throughout the world wherever angry America-haters (and American self-haters) brood.

This can only be described as one of those moments – with state-sponsored media offering a public stage for these outrageous conspiracy theories – that one feels sincerely ashamed to be a German citizen…

UPDATE: Several readers point out that the documentary (which had not yet aired at the time of this posting) reviews numerous conspiracy theories – only to debunk or contradict them at the very end. It is true that the documentary reaches this conclusion – and we are happy about that – but the entire program is presented and advertised in a manner that hypes and promotes the madness – and offers the conspiracy theorists a platform to spread their lies. Further – had a ZDF documentary concluded that 9/11 was an inside job – the media reaction certainly would not have limited itself to this blog. But the cavalier and disrespectful manner in which the network handles the topic with its article and poll is disturbing – and has more to do with ratings than with a responsible handling of the subject. The poll – which offers outrageous choices (only “space aliens”, “Israel”, and “free masons” were missing) is a clear indicator that ZDF is anything but dedicated to dispelling the many myths that surround 9/11.

    Watch and decide for yourself:

UPDATE #2: The media reaction to ZDF’s 9/11 internet debacle is no longer limited to this blog. Henryk Broder published this piece today on SPIEGEL ONLINE that characterizes ZDF’s presentation as a “disinformation offensive.” (We will post the English translation as soon as it becomes available.) Unfortunately – SPIEGEL ONLINE is hardly an innocent bystander when it comes to flagrant abuse of 9/11 and its victims.

  • The Chairwoman of the German branch of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) – Angelika Claussen – was recently interviewed on “Kulturzeit” a program on the German state-sponsored television channel “3sat”.

When asked to comment on the danger of nuclear terrorism, Claussen refers to the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center as “airplane accidents” and “airplane crashes.” The exchange was brought to our attention by German blogger David Harnasch and can be viewed below (with English subtitles):

It is interesting to note (in what can only be described as journalistic malpractice) that the interviewer – Dieter Moor – does not challenge or so much as question Ms. Claussen’s outrageous characterizations of the attacks on the World Trade Center buildings as “airplane accidents” and “airplane crashes.” Instead, he continues on – completely unperturbed by Claussen’s twisted references to the 9/11 terror attacks – and concludes by thanking her for the “outstanding discussion” (View the entire interview here.)

Once again – German taxpayers’ money is being put to good use by state-supported public television. Just makes you want to run out and pay your GEZ fee (a mandatory state tax on all radio and television owners) early this month – doesn’t it?

Simply put: There is a segment of the Angry Left in Germany that is determined to deny or alter the reality of September 11, 2001. They revel in conspiracy theories or pretend the whole thing was an unfortunate accident. Is it any wonder then – with individuals like Ms. Claussen in positions of influence – and German public television offering them a ready-made platform to propagate their ideas – that so many Germans have so little sympathy towards the United States and the victims of 9/11?

Endnote: You can reach Ms. Claussen with your comments at: kontakt@ippnw.de. Please keep all emails civil and respectful.

UPDATE: Bruce Bawer’s recent commentary in the LA Times, entitled “The peace racket”, seems an appropriate complement to this posting.

(…Or the War over Vietnam and Historic Revisionism…)

Skimming the web – I came across this typical smear photo on SPIEGEL ONLINE. It is one of hundreds selected over the years by various members of the media to firmly reinforce the stereotype of Bush as the arrogant-stupid-religious-zealot:

The image “https://medienkritik.blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/0,1020,949888,00.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Bush with cross in background: A popular motif at SPIEGEL…

Later I received an email from our reader Helian with the following observations on the SPIEGEL ONLINE article in question, entitled: “Bush’s Vietnam Comparison Outrages Democrats and Ex-Military“:

    “According to the article…

  • Joerg at Atlantic Review has more.

This time it is an RAF killer – last time a Hezbollah killer of another US service member. Of course the eternal apologists for all that is wrong with Germany will tell us we should “respect” German law. Sorry – no sale.

In other news, Joerg reports that Germany’s travelers are being encouraged by their Foreign Ministry to lecture others on human rights abuses while abroad. This German habit of lecturing the rest of the world on virtually everything is growing extremely tiresome to many Americans (and others) – particularly since so little of the criticism is actually constructive or based on a full understanding of facts and circumstances. The credibility of Germany is further decimated by its Foreign Ministry when top diplomats attempt to deny that anti-Americanism exists in German media and society.

Perhaps Americans ought to respond to the endless barrage of stupid and predictable criticism by mentioning the release of the two murderers above and the outrageous epidemic of unthinking anti-Americanism in German media. The fundamental reason that Americans will never respond with the same intensity is because they generally view such lecturing as highly impolite and off-putting and often don’t care for the uninformed opinions of biased foreigners.

For what it’s worth, here is our list of favorite “pet issues” of the German media in their coverage of the United States:

    1. Perceived American religiosity and/or prudishness.
    2. Perceived American obsession with guns and violence.
    3. The death penalty.
    4. The perceived excess and superficiality of American capitalism and (non)culture (i.e. fat people, the super rich, SUVs, fast-food, M-TV/hip-hop culture, Hollywood, corporate scandals, buy-outs and “excessive” profits.)
    5. Perceived social inequality in the United States (i.e. amerikanische Verhaeltnisse, poor Americans are starving and freezing to death or at least struggling with 2-3 jobs and no health insurance while the rich live it up. Perception that America has no social safety net or a woefully inadequate social safety net.)
    6. Perceived American unilateralism/exceptionalism (i.e. Iraq, Kyoto, ICC, Guantanamo)
    7. Perceived American “hurrah” patriotism or “hyper” patriotism (i.e. flag-waving).
    8. Perceived American paranoia/overreaction about terror and obsession with security and the “war” on terror and the perceived willingness of Americans to sacrifice key civil liberties (the Patriot Act has become a favored target) and take extrajudicial actions involving torture, renditions, etc.
    9. The perception that the Bush administration controls (or at least dominates) the media and can somehow intimidate media into following the party line. The perceived view that there is a lack of diversity of opinion in US media and that FoxNews, talk radio and blogs are the menacing conservative vanguard of what all US media are becoming or have already become. (i.e. US media are “gleichgeschaltet” or in lock-step.)
    10. Anything that casts a negative light on the US military (i.e. Abu Ghraib, trials of US troops, bombings or killings of civilians real or imagined).
    11. Anything that casts a negative light on the Bush administration.
    12. Iraq is a disaster-quagmire-catastrophe-debacle perhaps unparalleled in human history. Iraq = Vietnam = defeat and humiliation for America, the US military and Bush.
    13. The perception of the US as an imperial hegemon out to expand its global power and military-industrial complex while using democracy as a convenient (yet false) excuse to do so. Oil = blood = Halliburton = war.

Interestingly enough – Stern’s latest America correspondent – Jan Christoph Wiechmann – has already gotten off to a fast start. His first few articles are on problems with health insurance, the super rich and the sensational socialist extremes in New York City. He also dedicates a piece to defending Gerhard Schroeder and whines about a judgmental American professor (yeah as if there are no Americans who have not been through much worse with Europeans). Now all that’s missing is a piece on guns, fast food, hyper patriotism or anything else that makes the United States look extreme, ugly or sensational to Stern’s far-left Hate-America readership. We are sure Mr. Wiechmann won’t disappoint us – he is welcome to use the list above for ideas.

  • Historical consistency has never been a strong point for SPIEGEL magazine or SPIEGEL ONLINE – but this is shocking:

    Just look at this article.

After years of calling Iraq a disaster, debacle and quagmire, SPIEGEL ONLINE has decided to declare the following:

“The US military is more successful in Iraq than the world wants to believe.”

This all stems from last week’s Der SPIEGEL magazine cover feature article by Ullrich Fichtner: An enormous, fascinating and remarkably honest report on the complex situation in Iraq. (The first link above in bolded-italics leads to the English translation of that report.) SPIEGEL ONLINE is also publishing Fichtner’s report that US troops are in a remarkably good mood and have high morale. That also flies directly in the face of past SPIEGEL reporting that consistently depicted US troops as demoralized, depressed, defeated, prone to suicide and suffering from low morale.

As a long-time observer of the publication, my first reaction to reading this on SPIEGEL ONLINE was: Are they on drugs?! – this directly contradicts everything they’ve reported for the past four years! My second reaction was: Have they finally gotten off the drugs?! Maybe reality is finally starting to sink in!

Keep in mind that less than a year ago, Der SPIEGEL published a magazine cover (depicted below) declaring Iraq a “Lost War”.

    Der SPIEGEL 41/2006

Power and Lies: George W. Bush and the Lost War in Iraq

Is this abrupt about-face cynical hedging – or a genuine (and extremely sudden) change of heart? We would speculate that SPIEGEL editors have finally reached the realization that the version of reality they have painstakingly crafted for the German public since the conflict began – one of failure, disaster, debacle and quagmire for the Americans in Iraq – is no longer tenable when compared to the facts on the ground and will ultimately collapse on their heads like a flimsy house of cards. But with many American Democrats still in full irrational disaster-mode on Iraq (despite obvious recent improvement with the surge) this seems a somewhat unusual and perhaps premature move. Only time will tell…

This much we can say: For once – SPIEGEL has truly done something unpredictable in terms of its USA and Iraq coverage.

UPDATE: Victor Davis Hanson offers outstanding analysis that may – at least in part – explain what is going on at SPIEGEL. Excerpt:

“Yet the universal human desire to be associated in the here and now with the assumed winning side — and to shun perceived defeat — trumps them all. Throughout this war, that natural urge explains most of the volatile and shifting views of our politicians, pundits and media as they scramble to readjust to the up-and-down daily news from Iraq.

And so it is with the latest positioning about the surge that to a variety of observers seems successful — at least for now.”

  • (By Ray Drake)

It wasn’t entirely unpredictable. When the bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, we at Medienkritik realized it was only a matter of time before members of the German media would attempt to interpret the tragedy much as they interpreted the New York power outage several years ago: As a sign that America is in a state of total collapse and decay.

The image “https://medienkritik.blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/ROSPANZ20030340001-312.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

After the New York Power Outage, SPIEGEL Published this cover: World Power Without Power: Appearances and Reality in the USA (2003) – The Reaction to the Bridge Collapse has been Predictably Similar…

Well – we didn’t have to wait long for the disingenuous sensationalism to materialize. SPIEGEL ONLINE’s Marc Pitzke – the anti-American hack-of-hacks – quickly came out with a piece that headlines: “Collapse of the US Infrastructure.” The article features a seven-part photo series entitled: “US Infrastructure: Decayed, Ailing, Defective.”

Not only is this headline beyond constructive criticism – it is more of the same cynical bashing that we have grown accustomed to in German media. It is nothing more than the usual – cheap and arrogant – hatred that German media consumers keep slurping down and sucking up. Deep down people like Marc Pitzke want to prove to themselves – at a highly visceral, ideological level – that the American system of capitalism is inherently inferior to their own statist, socialist model. So any opportunity to claim that America is in a state of total decay and collapse is taken with great relish. (No – this has nothing to do with just reporting the plain facts.)

Little context and little desire to engage in constructive criticism have become the rule and not the exception in much of the German media coverage of the United States. Disgusting but true…

SPIEGEL magazine covers – 1997 to 2006. Representative of the magazine’s “objective” coverage of the United States over the past decade…

Endnote: Ironically, Minnesota – the state responsible for maintaining the bridge – is (along with Vermont and Massachusetts) perhaps the most ideologically in tune with Europe in terms of favoring left-leaning social, political and economic policies. Nonetheless – the German media will certainly find some way to drum up the usual charge: This is all Bush’s fault.

(Apparently someone finally noticed our plea of 2003!)

Who needs enemies? Forget about Iraq – the vast majority of Germans (over two-thirds) don’t even support the mission in Afghanistan. So much for “solidarity.” Via Bloomberg:

“German voters are uneasy about Germany’s military
    engagement in Afghanistan
regardless of the mandate, polls show.
Sixty-eight percent of 1,000 people questioned by Emnid oppose
    Germany’s military deployment
, according to a poll published on
May 22, three days after three German soldiers and five Afghan
civilians were killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan. No
more than 29 percent said they supported the engagement
    .”

Put another way – when the chips are down – most Germans do NOT stand with America in Afghanistan or in the fight against terrorism.

Also – consider this fundamental reality: One of the primary motivations for anti-Americanism is the imbalance in military power between the United States and Europe. I addressed this in a 2004 letter to George Soros – as true today as it was back then:

The fundamental imbalance of power arising from Europe’s inability
to live up to its military obligations and its lingering dependence on
the USA provides for an environment of inequality and resentment. Many
European nations such as France and Germany have come to define
themselves through their resistance to US “dominance” or “hegemony”
which they define as “unilateral” despite the fact that the US is
currently in a coalition consisting of dozens of nations in Iraq. They
insist that the US seek “legitimacy” through “multilateral” channels.
In reality, these terms are code words for European checks on US power.
Despite your claims to the contrary Mr. Soros, there is nothing
particularly “multilateral” or “legitimate” about one, two or even
three nations with a veto in the UN Security Council, (France, Russia
and China) determining whether US actions are justified or not. To me,
a Chinese dictator sitting in Beijing should not have the right to
determine what is “multilateral” or “legitimate” in the world, yet that
is exactly how the UN Security Council works. To expect Americans to
put their security in the hands of such a dictator is, again, not only
unrealistic but also dangerous, particularly in a post 9/11 world.

The solution is for European nations to step up to the plate in
accepting greater international responsibility. Until they do so, they
will never be accepted by the United States as “equal partners.” That
means they will have to spend far more on their militaries so that they
can actually resolve conflicts such as the one in Bosnia without US
help. A stronger Europe would allow the United States to spend less on
its military and more on international aid. A stronger Europe would
contribute to a greater equilibrium of power in the world. But a
stronger Europe standing side-by-side with the US in partnership will
never become a reality if Europeans don’t become proactive and simply
continue to blame the United States for all the world’s problems. I
fear that your criticisms contribute to and reaffirm this complacency
    born of blame.

Unfortunately, in your book and on your website, you choose to
largely ignore the failings of the Europeans, the UN and the
international community. You and many others have turned President Bush
into a convenient scapegoat for virtually everything. I believe that
this flagrant lack of balance also runs rampant in the European press
and has done serious damage to transatlantic relations. If we refuse to
look at this problem from a more comprehensive, balanced position, we
will never be able to solve it. And the European bubble of impotence
and resentment will continue to grow and grow.

This will not change when Bush leaves office. It is the power gap – not Bush or his policies – that, among other things, drives fundamental, long-term European anti-American resentments.
